PRESIDENT BUSH CALLS ON SILICON VALLEY ACTIVIST
TO DISCUSS CLASS ACTION REFORM
SAN
JOSE, Calif. —- President George W. Bush met today with Don Wolfe,
former Mayor of Saratoga and current president of Silicon Valley
Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse, at the White House to discuss the
problem of class action abuse and the need for reform.
Wolfe was invited to speak with the President because of his
first-hand experience with abusive class actions. In the late
1990’s, Wolfe was named as a class member in a lawsuit against a
computer manufacturer. At issue was the size of the monitor
screens. Wolfe received a coupon for $6, while the lawyers in the
case received $5.8 million.
“I
didn’t ask to be involved in the suit, and I certainly wasn’t
harmed, yet the system allowed these lawyers, who I never hired, to
file suit in my name and walk away with millions of dollars in
fees,” Wolfe said. “The system is out of control and needs to be
fixed.”
According to a White House press release, President Bush is calling
on Congress to pass legal reforms that will return justice to the
truly injured with class action reform, curb lawsuit abuse with
needed medical liability reform and aid asbestos victims with a fair
system and long term solution.
