Frivolous Survey

SAN JOSE -- More than three-quarters of Silicon Valley residents believe that frivolous lawsuits are a serious problem, according to a Survey released by Silicon Valley Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (CALA) and the Pacific Research Institute.

"The citizens of Silicon Valley realize that we all pay and we all lost when in comes to frivolous lawsuits," said CALA Executive Director Don Wolfe.

The survey also showed that 75 percent of the residents in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties believe that frivolous lawsuits are having a negative effect on the state's economy. Furthermore, 71 percent say these suits increase the cost of consumer goods and 77 percent believe they raise the cost of medical care. A whopping 87 percent feel that their insurance premiums are higher because of lawsuit abuse.

"Lawsuit abuse is costing California jobs, raising the price of products and services and discouraging companies from developing new products," Wolfe said.

"The situation has become obvious to nearly everyone but the few trial lawyers who profit from the system--things have gotten out of hand and need to be fixed," he added.
